Last night Sarah and I headed over to the Anthropologie on Chicago Ave. for a workshop from Decor8′s Holly Becker. I purchased Holly’s book last fall and enjoyed the chance to hear some of the inspiration behind it firsthand. Surprisingly, one my biggest takeaways was the German translation for “unconditional love.” (Holly currently lives in Germany with her husband, Thorsten.) After growing up in a stressful environment Holly sought her own meaning for the word and what it means for a personal living space.
(I also enjoyed meeting Nicole of Making it Lovely who’s there in the background!)
If you read Decor8, you’ll quickly realize that Holly is a fan of mood boards, which was a good portion of the workshop. Anthro was kind enough to supply some various pieces for the boards. (It’s amazing what collecting various pieces of your life will reveal about you as well. I’ve heard people do this for creative therapy!)
Sarah left me to check out the snacks. The moment she exclaimed, “Shrimp cocktail!” I knew she was gone.
Holly smiling away and doing her thing! She’s also incredibly down to earth and personable. Throughout the night, she calmly talked with different people as they mingled through the room and she signed copies of Decor8.
After Holly wrapped up, we had a chance to grab a few of our own inspired pieces and create a mood board.
And after asking Holly to sign our copies of Decorate, we were out the door!
I’ve mentioned Holly on SuLu a time or two . . . not only because I’m inspired by her blog, but her story. She’s someone who knew what she wanted out of life, was in a dead-end job and decided to leave it to pursue her dreams. But she wasn’t mean or prideful about it. She didn’t set out to “brand” herself or become a best-selling author. She just did what she loved well, worked hard and that now resonates with more than 44,000 readers each day. Congrats Holly!
A bonus to this event was also being in a room with so many talented and creative women! I walked away with a couple of creative blog reads – calliegrayson and wanderlustings – are two in particular you might enjoy. Caitlin (of Wanderlustings) was also incredibly sweet and asked for quick outfit shot of Sarah and I, which made us laugh!
“Bedingungslose Liebe” though . . . I’m still thinking about that one. In your own life arrangement, is this German phrase for unconditional love a part of who you are? Whether you’re designing your first home or you’re one of the guys I work with who secretly reads this feminine blog (ha! love you guys!) . . . do people get a sense that where you exist they are loved?
[...] Mostly just honored because I respect Holly as an artist and creative. So enjoyed her workshop the other night at Anthropologie! Related Posts :Thistle Farms random, meet spontaneous. friday fives: blog-world cuties. random [...]
